Sessions with Saxton and Sellers at the 1989 SWRHW
The next two sessions that I have VHS tapes of from the 1989 Southwest Regional Horn Workshop are by Earl Saxton and Jacquelyn Sellers. Philip Farkas did the opening session on Saturday.
One thing I should mention right off the top is that these sessions are pretty wide ranging in content due to them being 1 1/2 hour sessions–most workshops have 50 minute sessions these days.
Earl Saxton in the 11:00 Saturday session focused on singing and the horn. He was an active teacher and player in the San Francisco area and published several articles on the topic, for example one in the May, 1971 issue of The Horn Call. In the session he emphasized singing in relation to building the ear, tone, and phrasing. A student played and Saxton ended with a visualization exercise.
Jacquelyn Sellers, Principal Horn of the Tucson Symphony, was next on the 2:00 Saturday session with the topic of auditioning and playing excerpts. One quote in regard to excerpt preparation was that practicing excerpts won’t keep your chops in top shape, you also need to practice etudes. She suggested Maxime-Alphonse and Reynolds. In her session three students also played. I did not recognize any of the players until the last player, who was Karl Kemm. According to his bio this would have been right around the time he joined the Air Force bands program; he is now at Del Mar College in Texas and we once judged a solo competition at a horn workshop together. Small world. And he played well in the class! Brahms 1 excerpts.
I have two more videos to go, more tomorrow.
