Parody: Vader at the Philharmonic

A look behind-the-scenes *

In this video the Star Wars character Darth Vader takes on the role of orchestra conductor. But instead of a baton the big baddie uses a light saber to lead the ensemble in — what else? — the “Empire” theme from Star Wars.

Thankfully, the stage manager gave the musicians plenty of room from the podium; an accidentally brush with a light saber would be disastrous, even deadly. It’s powerful energy beam can slice through virtually anything.

One cannot help but wonder — given Vader’s leanings towards darkness, evil deeds and general nastiness — what the real story might be behind this video.

With a wave of the finger or a strike of the light saber, dissenters are quickly silenced. The poor fool who clams in this orchestra receives no mercy from the podium.

Chaos at the Illinois Symphony Orchestra

It’s a good thing that conductor Karen Lynn “Darth” Deal doesn’t use a light saber to conduct. The carnage would be even greater than it is already.

From this end, the whole fiasco appears to be another classic case of what happens when a narcissist takes control — and then gets out-of-control. If it weren’t true, this story would make riveting fiction worthy of a daytime soap opera.

An article at the Illinois Times Online** provides the gory details in a detailed exposé. This time, it isn’t just the musicians who are complaining.
