Over the years many times I have been asked to explain a few details about E-flat tenor and alto horns to others.

In response to this need I have added A Tenor Horn/Alto Horn FAQ to Horn Articles Online. Check it out for a good overview of the instrument.

I also lately, since the completion of my mellophone book, have been playing tenor horn fairly regularly and have what I am calling my “tenor horn project” underway. It feels rather different to play with piston valves at the E-flat pitch length; the combination does open a window to a more cornet-like technique in the alto range if you have the fingerings worked out. It has been particularly interesting (and fun) over the Christmas break to work on the Hindemith alto horn sonata on the instrument it was composed for, the alto/tenor horn.
