Mini-Review: Brass Instruments from the MIM Collection

Over the holidays relatives descended in droves upon my homestead, and so to get out of the house we decided to go to the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in north Phoenix for a day-trip. This was my first visit to this museum. Back in May 2010, John wrote about his first visit and he has also given a few [...]

On Sexism and Things to Not Say in a Master Class

In updating the Events page recently I noted in the website for the 2012 International Women’s Brass Conference an article by co-host Lin Foulk titled “Why IWBC 2012?” This particular section was one that caught my attention, on her experience with sexism in the brass world and a story from a public master class. IHS San Francisco, Part I: How About Those High Notes?

Last year Horn Matters had fairly detailed day-by-day coverage of IHS Brisbane. This year will be a bit briefer in scope, but not because there is not plenty to report on. The conference for me started on Saturday with meetings of the Advisory Council of the International Horn Society. People often ask me what we [...]

The Southeast Horn Workshop for 2011 was held on the campus of ASU! Appalachian State University that is–Boone, NC. It was a great event, hosted by Karen Robertson, with over 350 hornists in attendance. The big one Stepping back a second, it is worth noting that there is only one other regular horn event in [...]
