Also I want to thank Bruce not only for the cool graphic in his post [me as a Simpson! Cool. But am I really that bald? Ok, I am on the way…] but also for his help over the years and for his substantial work in general for the horn on the Internet. When my site started Bruce was the webmaster of the IHS Online. He was of help to me way back then starting out, and as I note in the longer article he actually named the site (something I don’t think he knew). Later, for more than six years, we also worked together on the IHS website. Now we are both blogging on the horn and both live in the Phoenix area. We actually first met at Eastman, I started a MM the year he was a junior. Who would have thunk it, that we would both be where we are now all these years later?

One of the oldies but goodies.

I just noticed (!) that John Ericson’s Horn Articles Online has hit its ten-year anniversary – a noteworthy accomplishment that deserves attention and praise.

Back in the mid-1990′s – the “old days” by Internet standards – only a handful of horn-related web sites with content existed. They included:

• Horn Articles Online
• Thomas Bacon’s Hornplanet
• IHS Online
• Ron Boerger’s Horn FAQ – probably the first, but sadly is no more…
• Bob Ward’s Homepage

Today, there are numerous horn-related web sites.

Horn Articles Online stands out from the pack with its tremendous depth and detail. In the ‘net-verse, web sites come and go on a regular basis; John’s web site not only has survived over the years, but continues to build with rich content. His blog is a resource that I check in on almost daily.

A big congratulations to John for ten years!

In early 1998 I first acquired a PC powerful enough to run a browser on it, prior to that I had only had E-mail access (and that only for a bit more than two years). At the time I was Third Horn in the Nashville Symphony and was enthusiastic about horn history, having recently completed a very substantial dissertation about the valved horn in early 19th century Germany and also several related articles for The Horn Call. The idea came to me that these materials could be worked into a website….

That spring I also interviewed and won the position of Assistant Professor of Horn at the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam. I contacted the person who did their website and he told me that SUNY Potsdam was well set up to host a faculty website such as I envisioned and that he used a Claris product to build theirs. So I purchased the same software and figured out how to use it to set up the first version of the site.

Horn Articles Online went live in August of 1998. Thank you to all who have visited over the years.
