Random Monday: IHS 43 Begins!

IHS Symposium under way
The 43rd annual symposium of the International Horn Society begins this week. My writing colleague John Ericson is there in-the-flesh and we can anticipate a few reports from him this week on Horn Matters.

Show up on time
Andrew Hitz relates a few important stories that emphasize a few of the basics of being a profession: on showing up early for gigs, and on having a concise voice-mail message.

Military bands under the axe?
I seriously doubt that this story will get very far, but it seems that a U.S. House representative has pushed through a 37.5% funding cut for the US Armed Forces music programs. In the grand scheme of the gigantic American debt, I doubt that this cut would make much of a difference.

Speaking of slashed funding
A musician speaks out about the recent, Draconian decision in the state of Kansas to eliminate all state and federal matching funding for the Arts.

Meanwhile in S.F.
A writer in San Francisco looks at the troubles with the New York City Opera and Philadelphia Orchestra and wonders if the arts in S.F. may be in trouble.

Where the money is
This article includes the salaries of a few American orchestra CEOs.

French horn and twirling

While many Frenship High School students may have slept in a few extra hours and gloried in the fact that there was no school Monday morning, some music students spent the day performing at the Texas Solo-Ensemble Contest.

Brady Franklin, a soon-to-be sophomore, is one of the latter, but she was a little busier even than her peers.

Franklin qualified to perform a solo on French horn and in an ensemble effort as a member of the twirling line at the contest at the University of Texas in Austin.

Too fat for the French horn?
A poem.

Hidden Mickeys
At the Disney theme parks, there is an Easter Egg hunt of sorts for items called hidden Mickeys. Basically on every ride and attraction there is a Mickey Mouse image incorporated into the design in one way or another. In this example, the claim is that French horn slides resemble Mickey’s ears. Compared to others that I myself have found, this looks fairly legitimate.
