Highlights from Summer 2010

One thing about Horn Matters that I enjoy is the interaction. The comments sometimes take on a life on their own, providing deeper insights. Another thing I like is trying out new things as a developer and messing around with new features.

If you put those two things together, we get this entry – a veritable peanut-butter-and-chocolate combination … or … uhmsomething like that.

I grabbed some recent articles from our Post Rank page and added in a few others with interesting comments. This feature may or may not find its way into the site in one form or another, but for now it is a fun way to showcase some of the social engagement from the summer so far.

[RSS subscribers may need to click through to see this new feature in action. I am not sure how this will render via RSS or on smart phones...]

Summer 2010 Highlights

High Range & Teeth

“Players with the easiest, almost freakishly easy high ranges have either slight gap teeth or crooked teeth. In either case it seems to allow a slightly freer vibration of the lips when they are in the formation for making the highest notes.”

John’s article “The Secret to the High Range: Teeth” currently ranks the highest in Post Rank, a tool for measuring social engagement.

Style and Geography

MC910216338 75x75 Highlights from Summer 2010A line from my post “6 Survival Tips” caught one reader’s attention:

“Sometimes it might feel as though a comment in a lesson is a direct criticism about personal style and beliefs.”

This lead to a discussion in the comments section about style, geography and employment goals. If you are thinking about playing in a foreign country, some research and planning is crucial.

3-Year College

From “The Three Year College Degree” -

“Traditionally in the United States a bachelor’s degree has been laid out so that you could earn it if you stay on track and focused in eight semesters of study spread over four years with no summer school. I have long wondered though when some schools would promote the fact that you could track students through with some summer studies to complete 120 credit hours in three years. That time is clearly upon us.”

Technical Materials

Sometimes we need to expand our horizons beyond the materials we learned from as students.

In “What I Studied From,” John traces his own path.

Playin' it old school

It is always interesting to listen to old recordings on YouTube. In another era, international and national boundaries included unique playing styles – much more so than today.
