I played trumpet for a few years after my horn was stolen, and I got fairly profficient, but could never get the tone or range that I needed. When my son needed a trumpet, I gave it to him and didn't play any brass for several years, until I decided to go back to the horn. With no disrespect intended to trumpeters, the horn is so much more difficult to play at the basic level. The "notches" on the trumpet are just better defined, and while they are not much use in exposed orchestral playing that requires spot on intonation, the faster bebop passages are just easier to execute on the trumpet than the horn. I am continually blow away when I hear Tom Varner shred these bebop lines on horn.

I also started on trumpet and later in college I played with a summer stock theater orchestra which had 1 trumpet, 1 horn and 1 trombone. I was often asked to play second trombone parts (bass clef and transposition), and I volunteered to play second trumpet for a fanfare in "The Man of La Mancha". I had a ball and the solo from The Impossible Dream which came after didn't seem to be affected, but the fanfare lasted only 30 seconds. It was fun, but I wouldn't recommend it. I don't remember what mouthpiece I used, but it was surely a standard Bach model. I feel a blog post coming on...:)
