Random Monday: Gustav Scores, Johann’s Secret and Leutgeb’s Ghost
- Mahler’s Personal Score
Through Kenneth Woods this treasure was found — Gustav Mahler’s annotated, personal copy of his first symphony at the NY Phil web site. You can flip page by page, and even zoom in. Very cool.
- J.S. Bach — serial killer
So the dodecahedron-ists have finally found an honest-to-goodness 12-tone row in a prelude of Johann Sebastian Bach. Listen to or read the transcript of “Discovery Reveals Bach’s Postmodern Side” over at the National Public Radio site. Horndog can only sigh in response.
- A modern-day Leutgeb
W.A. Mozart’s favorite horn player and cheese-monger may have a contemporary doppleganger. “Cheese guy” Rob Murphy owns a cheese company and is also a horn player and teacher. Horndog’s wife loves cheese curds — when they are fresh, they squeak in your mouth!
- Drill sargeant redux
The cartoon web site that was linked to in last week’s Random Monday post was experiencing a malicious attack. For most, the link to the Drill Sargeant cartoon was broken. The web site — Basic Instructions — has since resolved the problem.”How to Teach” is back online and worth a look. Funny, brilliant and poignant.
- Tonguing
I suppose that it was only a matter of time before a question like this would pop up on the Internet. My response to this would be something in the manner of an eye roll skywards and a shrug of the shoulders. For any serious horn students I believe this is not a good idea.
- This week
I may be posting sporadically this week.In preparing and optimizing the Horn Matters site, I have spent most of my time developing the site and not writing. My cache of articles has been depleted for the time being. Rest assured that this is only temporary and next week, I hope to resume my daily weekday posting schedule.
