In the UK there's tribalism over Paxmans versus "Dirties" (Alexanders), there has been trends to go for Large belled (New World in Paxman speak) or Medium (European). Some orchestras won't hear anyone not playing a 103 (RSNO) whilst other sections all play Yamahas or Reynolds in the past(LPO). Alan Civil is known to have quipped over a nickel silver horn - Wrong Colour! I think horn players will always have strong views about what they like I guess but I think we can generally recognise wonderful playing when we hear it too!
I'm really enjoying both of your blogs BTW well done!

@Simon - funny!
@Bruce - yup, American horn players can be colloquial and opinionated about their beliefs. I do recall an article in the Horn Call within the past few years by Frøydis Ree Werke more or less making the same points as this tongue-in-cheek list. I wonder if she was referring more to Americans or Euros, or both?

Living in Europe I find that most of these items are particular to the States. American horn players are more into this kind of stuff. Most Europeans, that I know, just laugh at the silly Americans fussing over nothing at all.
