Great Sounds from The Academy Mellos
Last night I had the chance to attend the final dress rehearsal in Tempe of The Academy drum corps, which was open to the public. My son and I had great time; they have a great show and a
great sound. I was especially happy with the mellophone section sound; it was among the best I have ever heard live, hitting a nice grove between a descant horn and a Flugelhorn. The show writing is very mello friendly in terms of range and scoring and the show itself starts out with a lonely mellophone solo, who could not like that?
I know at least a few readers out there do follow the middle brass scene. The Academy uses Jupiter and last year was using Curry mouthpieces on the mellos. So far as I know that is the setup now as well.
In short, great job Academy mellos–great show, great sound, and good luck on the final push to DCI!
