Random Monday
Reflections and navel-gazing.
- The responses to “Copy, Paste and Steal” have been very helpful. A big thanks to those that took the time to comment and test things out.
- Announcements on both the Jupiter web site and on the Boston Brass’ (very purple) web site confirm that after 15 years, hornist J.D. Shaw is retiring from the group.
He has been recently appointed Professor of Horn and Assistant Director of Athletic Bands at the University of New Mexico.
Chris Castellanos has been hired as the replacement hornist for the Boston Brass. One presumes that he will no longer play with the Dallas Brass.
- I am excited to have gotten the new Horn Callfrom the IHS — now if only little Buster would let me read it.
Once I wrestled it from the clutches of the furry and ferocious feline, a tiny phrase in the Peter Damm article caught my attention — “pre-warmup.” Farkas also uses this term in his practice routine in The Art of French Horn Playing.
I am never quite sure what that means and how that differs from the warmup. Since the warmup is a precursor to normal playing, is the pre-warmup a precusor to the precursor?
- Upon further investigation, the topic of last Friday’s post appears to have long a history — failed symphony/opera mergers in the U.S. One example is provided by a commenter at Adaptistration’s “Mixed Nuts” post — George Brown, a musician with the Utah Symphony, offers excellent points about “tactics” versus “strategies.”

Things read over the weekend. A story from 1919 – French horn player put on trial.
