Vio-horn? Horn-a-lin?

A true oddity.

Over at Daily Observations, Charles Noble has posted pictures and video of an odd instrument called the Stroh violin, or violinophone. It is basically a fingerboard, bridge and tailpiece with a small metal bell attached for amplification.

A colleague of Charles’ brought it to an Oregon Symphony Orchestra rehearsal and he took pictures and posted them on his blog. Since it had a horn bell, even principal horn John Cox gave it a shot.

Check it out! It kind of sounds like a combination violin-trumpet playing through an old fashioned gramophone.
