A Mellophone Renaissance
The mellophone has in the past few years seen a Renaissance, a rebirth driven especially by the use of standard band instruments (including the F mellophone) in the modern drum corps. Long considered something of a poor cousin of the horn, new mouthpieces are available, a new book was published recently by Horn Notes Edition on the Mellophone, and it is known that a mellophone concerto was recently composed and premiered. Many horn players hate them, but the reality is that band directors love them as they are more accurate than any other type of marching horn, they are relatively inexpensive, and players from the trumpet and woodwind sections can switch to them fairly easily. And presented well the mellophone can be part of the solution to the horn problem, as those players that come to it from other instruments are all potential converts to our beloved French horn.
In response to this Renaissance, the mellophone will be featured in sessions at the next International Horn Symposium. Be watching for more details to be announced exclusively on The Mellocast, a podcast for mellophonists everywhere.
