Is Horn Playing a Hobby?
About a year ago I wrote a post on hobbies. When I have the time in a month or so I do plan to do more with my hobbies, and I know many professional horn players and teachers have hobbies and interests totally unrelated to the horn. Which is a good thing!
Hobbies are a topic on my mind again a bit, and I keep coming back to a question posed me by an ASU colleague in another department, in the sciences. He enjoyed singing and playing guitar, and for him music was a hobby, a great release from the pressures of his teaching and research. What he asked me was, as a musician, what did I do as a hobby?
While I could then tell him one of my hobby interests was model railroading, it got me thinking. Certainly for some of you reading this horn playing is a hobby. Others of you reading this are music majors in college; for you horn playing can’t really be a hobby although I hope you enjoy horn playing. Still others of you certainly fall into a semi-pro category where horn is a mixture of hobby and work (or making a profit off your hobby).
Horn playing can be a hobby. The important thing is, as my science colleague was aware, there is a need for a variety of interests. Figure out what is work in your life and be sure that you have some other things around that you enjoy to balance things out.
