Video: The Weber Concertino on Natural Horn
I had some very positive responses to the video posted a few days ago of Javier Bonet playing the last movement of the Mozart K. 407 Quintet on natural horn. He posted a group of videos, and the below is also great fun to see. The Concertino, Op. 45, by Weber is a challenging work on any type of horn and especially so on the instrument it was composed for, the natural horn! Below is evidence that it can be done.
One note I would add is about something that has always intrigued me about this work. The final section, right after the chords (check them out! They are at about 10:30 in) is a Polacca, a type of Polish dance. After the completion of this work a number of other composers wrote works for horn that included a movement of the same type. How many can you name? It would make a decent DMA project for someone out there.
UPDATE: The Facebook video seems to have quit working. I don’t see this one (yet) on YouTube but as an alternate until it is there (I will keep an eye out for it) below is the last movement of the Mozart K.417. Enjoy!
