When the Horn is Not Enough

The Boston Brass hornist.

In baseball a “switch-hitter” is a player that can bat either right or left-handed. In the world of theater, the term “triple-threat” refers to performers that can sing, dance and act.

Boston Brass hornist, J.D. Shaw needs a similar term for his amazing pedigree of skills. He not only is a talented horn player, but is also a skilled arranger. The vast majority of the Boston Brass’ music is arranged by Mr. Shaw.

What is the 3rd “threat” you ask?

He also plays a mean trumpet. Check out the video below – at the 3:50 mark Mr. Shaw makes a switch. When I first saw this live I laughed out loud with glee and awe. What do you call this kind of talent other than amazing?
