Start the Semester with Some Etudes

As the semester starts, this year the first assignment to all ASU horn students not currently working on an audition (several are! Good luck!) was to bring in at least two etudes, and etudes will be a focus for the first part of the semester. Etudes are sometimes neglected by students (and teachers) but are a great way to work on solidifying technique and musicality. I am particularly interested this semester to hear students play the Gallay Op. 57 studies for second horn and also the Gally Unmeasured Preludes, which are a wonderful musical challenge for an advanced student.

My list of favorite etudes may be found here. Don’t neglect etude study no matter what your level is as a player. My personal daily practice right now includes several Kopprasch and Gallay etudes, and I know I am not alone among professional hornists to come back to etudes regularly as a part of maintaining embouchure health.
