Playing with the City Band and the BNSF Railroad
Before heading to IHS Denver I spent a week and a half with my mom in Kansas. There were many highlights, one being playing the finale of Mozart 3 with the Emporia Municipal Band.
It was the classic small town community band concert in a bandstand in a park next to the BNSF mainline. I played with the group for all or part of six or seven summers in the late 70s and 80s. Returning there were still a few familiar faces in the group; one member, on euphonium, has been playing with the group since the 1940s! I hope to sound as good when I am his age.
In terms of me the concert went well and was a good workout before heading to Denver. The BNSF provided about a dozen trains to accompany the concert, including one that joined me for the last chords of the Mozart.
Then it was on to Denver! More about that in the next post.
