More satire on the mess in Columbus.

 A Royal Flush in Columbus

The blogosphere – especially of late – has been ablaze with pointed commentary on the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Terms like “homicide” are frequently being used to describe what their board is doing.

CSO clarinetist David Thomas quipped at his blog The Buzzing Reed recently that yours truly had a “hay” day with “Hopping on the Columbus Bandwagon.”

One good pun deserves another – I hope this new cartoon injects a little humor into what is otherwise is a painful and shameful travesty.

I am not the only one of course who noticed Beadle’s recent crass rhetoric, metaphorically alluding to the orchestra as an extinct institution that eats money, as letters from Gisela and Paul Josenhaus posted at The Buzzing Reed illustrate.

An opportunity for the CSO board and management – to give an appropriate and respectful farewell to a major cultural institution with a long history – has been squandered on cheeky metaphors.

“At the end of the day, people have to understand that we’ve got a huge dinosaur here that has to be fed 500 bales of hay a day.”

Hey, if you are going to be that obvious…well…go buy Photoshop and make stupid cartoons while you’re at it.

On a much smaller scale here in Phoenix, the Symphony of the West Valley is rising from the ashes – this time as the West Valley Chamber Orchestra – after having collapsed a few years ago in a scenario very similar to the current one in Columbus.

We can only hope that the same will happen in Ohio – that it will rise again…sooner rather than later.
