A Konzertstuck to be Heard
I have been meaning to post this one for a while now. I stumbled on this YouTube video of the Schumann Konzertstuck for Four Horns on YouTube, and having taken lessons with Dale Clevenger in Chicago back in the late 80′s, I instantly recognized him.
But who where the other horn players? What orchestra is this and why was Dale Clevenger playing second horn?
Sometimes the beauty of YouTube lies in its comments. Digging into them I discovered that this video is an excerpt from a DVD titled “Berliner Philharmoniker – Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin 1998.” Stephan Dohr is playing principal horn and his playing is nothing short of amazing.
The other two hornists are Ignacio Garcia and Georg Schreckenberger.
The orchestra is the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Daniel Barenboim. While the compressed sound quality of the video is not ideal, this performance just floored me with its technical bravado and lyric expressiveness.
Stefan Dohr is a simple joy to watch and listen to.
Enjoy!
