Play in Orchestra and Band?

A question that comes up when people compare schools is that of playing in orchestra or band. I feel there is much to be learned in both ensembles, both can be valuable experiences. As an undergrad in particular much can be learned working out your music in your chair in band, and at an advanced level the music is often more challenging than that seen in orchestras.

Of the schools I attended I played in orchestras and bands at most of them, and I took part in a variety of chamber music opportunities at all of the schools as well.

In terms of ASU it is not a problem to play in both, and a majority of horn students do just that. The groups do not meet on the same days (orchestras are MWF, bands Tuesday/Thursday), so the two fit together well. Seating wise the conductors seem to always hear things a bit differently so the seatings are varied between the groups.
