Notes on the 2008 Southeast Horn Workshop
This workshop was a new one for me in terms of perspective as it was my first one where I was not only a presenter but also an exhibitor. A few random thoughts:
1. It was a great location, nice new facility, just right sized. Many thanks to the host Kristen Hansen and to Columbus State University.
2. I did not hear every concert but what I heard renewed my appreciation for the difference between beautiful, artistic playing and blasting. I do not enjoy blasters on the horn. Strive for the big contrasts, be aggressive when needed, but don’t go beyond the “red zone” unless that is the musical statement the composer really intends.
3. I had great attendance at my “horn gym” warm-up session, I think over 60 people were there. The room was packed! If you came, thank you for making it to the session.
4. The reactions to my new publications were very encouraging, several at the event had read them already before the workshop. Thanks to all for their kind words, they meant a lot to me.
