On the New Books

I am pleased to report first that all of my new publications are selling. I have sold the most copies of Playing High Horn, with all the rest coming to nearly the same level of sales.

The Southeast Horn Workshop last weekend was the first event where the books have been displayed and I ended up describing a couple of the books at length. From what I can gather Introducing the Horn and Playing the Wagner Tuba are pretty much what people thought they would be when they open it up on the table and flip them through. The former being a book for beginners and people switching to the horn (and their band directors) and the Wagner tuba book is a method/excerpt book for Wagner tuba. Playing High Horn and A Mello Catechism seemed to need a bit more explanation.

Playing High Horn is about all things high horn. That is, high range development, use of descant and triple horns, high range solos and excerpts, tips of various types, etc. It is a little hard to categorize in a way as it is sort of a combination method and excerpt book with solos and more. It is not a high range version of Randy Gardner’s book but some elements are similar. In short, this publication is getting good reactions in the field, check it out if it sounds interesting.

The mellophone book is similarly about all things mellophone. It is not exactly a “Farkas book” of mellophone, but tries to hit a middle ground in terms of information that would be useful to not only a player at the high school level but also band directors, drum corps aficionados, and horn teachers. It has been reviewed positively as well and if it seems it might be of interest to you check it out.
