Laskey G or Laskey J

Regular readers know that I have tried a lot of mouthpieces over the years and for the past nine months or so have been playing a Laskey mouthpiece, the 80G. Their G cup is a great cup and has been received very well by many of my current students, the 75G being very popular. It has an inner diameter of 17.5 mm, the 80G having an inner diameter of 18 mm.

The student who has my 75J now likes it a lot and I like the 80J a lot as well. It is interesting as the J cup is essentially the same depth as the G but the shape is different. I don’t perceive it to be essentially that much brighter. The difference is more about the tone color behaving a bit differently and also things seem to respond more quickly.

[UPDATE: On the depth of the J cup, to explain it more fully, if you put the back of a pencil or pen in both cups the J is shallower, but if you measure the depth to the point where the bore starts (with a number 13 drill) the J and G cups are about the same depth. It is probably best to just think of the J being shallower, but it is more about the shape being different. AND, I should clarify, the sound is a bit brighter overall.]

In short, if you have tried and like the Laskey G cup, great, it is a very nice horn mouthpiece, but also consider the J cup as well. They are both very worth consideration, very responsive with a great tone.
