Be Somebody
I am on The MelloCast again this week, episode 23, joining in the discussion of the topic of woodwind players and the mellophone. Part of the topic for me was I have had good students who switched to the horn from the flute, oboe, and saxophone, and I know players who started on clarinet as well.
Horn is a unique instrument among the brasses in that by the high school level I would bet half of the players on horn started on another instrument. I would welcome someone out there to study this further. In the United States the mellophone is certainly a part of that puzzle of what brings a woodwind player over to the horn. As I used to say when I taught horn methods (techniques) classes at my previous school, The Crane School of Music, it is never too late to switch your major instrument. “Be somebody–be a horn player!”
