When I was Eighteen…

Today we had one of the best brass area sessions that we have had recently at ASU. The focus was on preparing audition tapes and resumes, with a panel of the full brass faculty.

A topic that came up was mention of several of the recent young talents who have won orchestral jobs. This prompted me to tell what I was doing when I was eighteen. I was a freshman music business major at a small college (Emporia State) who had a fairly major embouchure problem (2/3 lower lip!) and aspired to be an instrument repairman.

The point being that you don’t have to have it all together when you are eighteen to “make it” in music, but you do have to work hard with good teachers to make the most of the talents you have.
