A Lunch with President Crow
Today ASU President Michael Crow had a special lunch meeting, which I attended, for the twenty-seven newly tenured faculty at ASU. (I was awarded tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in the spring).
It is always interesting to go to a meeting like this with faculty from many departments. As the meeting began we each introduced ourselves and spoke briefly about our research interests. For me I focused on my recent work with descant and triple horns, as this is the cutting edge of horn playing today and I have been working very actively on materials that will be released soon relating to high range development (more in another post soon). But ASU is a major, research one university and I was seated between someone in industrial engineering and another person in physics. Many of my newly tenured colleagues were working on projects including cancer research, cutting edge technology, sustainability, etc.
This is the real world of academia. For those considering teaching at the college level full time at a large school you do need to always work toward having a project area you are working in at a high level. Be a leader in your field. Even if you are not in academia, always be thinking about not only taking your playing to a high level but also how your research and teaching efforts can be turned into impact in and outside the horn world.
