In the Breathing Gym
These past few years a publication and DVD by my ASU colleagues Sam Pilafian and Patrick Sheridan has taken off in the brass world, The Breathing Gym. If you are interested in better breathing (you should be!) this is a great product, presented very well by Sam and Pat.
In terms of horn what I find is a lot of younger players don’t breathe very well. You can get by to a point with poor breathing on horn but it really would be better with good breathing form. In terms of me as I age I find it very important to keep my breathing strong; I do elements of the routines they present every week.
Sam and Pat at ASU use these materials as a part of their breathing and warm-up classes. Thus, following up on The Breathing Gym, Sam and Pat put together The Brass Gym. It is basically the warm-up routine and technique building materials they use with tuba and euphonium students, very well organized and presented, with a play along CD. It works not only on building technique but also building up the ear, and applies the breathing to actual music.
