100% Accuracy
My faculty recital at ASU went well overall yesterday; certainly I am happy with the sound and general effect. Still, it was not perfect. Thinking back to previous performances there have been lots of good ones but only one note perfect major solo performance comes to mind, that being the audition I won in Nashville. I knew the music for that audition forwards and backwards and did not miss one note in any round of that audition. It took a lot of effort to get to that point, and that is what it takes to win an orchestra job.
Accuracy is a really big topic. It is tempting at times to make changes in my playing that might leave my tone less beautiful but might also make for better accuracy as a soloist. We can probably all think of players who are extremely accurate but do not have a great tone. There is obviously a balance to be found.
As the fall performing season starts keep striving for a great tone and great music making but also ponder how to increase your accuracy. As food for thought, a few thoughts on improving accuracy by Nicholas Smith may be found here.
