The Count Down
The semester is almost over, but this post is not a count down to the end of the semester but about counting down to start pieces in an audition or jury.
One really useful habit Eli Epstein suggested to me for audition excerpts was to count down in tempo to the start of the excerpt. If the excerpt is in 4/4 for example, count in tempo mentally 4-3-2-1 as you start. It sets the “groove,” guides you toward a good breath and articulation, and mentally tunes you into the performance at hand. Try it on your next jury or performance or audition, it can helpful.
